Roofing and Restoration in Eminence, KY

Eminence owes its start to the railroad. When the line from Louisville toward Frankfort was built in 1849, local landowner Gideon King persuaded the railroad to run its tracks across his farm, giving land for the track, the station, a freight house and cattle pens. The town that grew up around the depot took the name Eminence, meaning "high place," because it sits about 900 feet above sea level at what was considered the highest point on the railroad between Louisville and Lexington. It incorporated in 1851 and grew larger than the county seat, New Castle.

Grain built the local economy. Eminence sat in one of the best wheat-growing sections of the state, and the Eminence Mill and Elevator and the Eminence Distillery shipped local crops out by rail. The first bank in Henry County opened here in 1867. Today Eminence is the largest city in Henry County, with 2,705 residents in 2020. Downtown along Main Street (KY 55) is the Eminence Historic Commercial District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and the old passenger depot now serves as City Hall. Residential streets surround the downtown on every side, with farm country beyond them.

Falls City Contracting is a veteran-owned, family-operated contractor in Louisville. Our crew works on houses, barns and outbuildings in Eminence, from the roof down to the chimney and brick.

Older Homes, Farmhouses and Barns

The historic depot in Eminence shows how much a roof can add to a building, with widely overhanging eaves on wooden brackets, a red tile roof and decoratively corbelled brick chimneys. If your home has an older brick chimney, age and weather take a toll on the crown and the mortar joints. A cracked crown can usually be rebuilt without taking the rest of the chimney apart, and tuckpointing restores worn joints. Where water piles up behind a wide chimney, a cricket sends it around instead of into the roof.

On older houses we look for what can be repaired before we talk about replacing anything. Loose granules in the gutters, curled or cracked shingles, popped nails and split rubber boots around vent pipes all point to a roof getting near the end of its life. Out on the farms around Eminence, barns and equipment sheds need attention too, so we check for loose or missing metal panels, backed-out fasteners and rust.

Tornadoes and Wind in Henry County

Henry County has seen its share of strong storms. On May 27, 2004, an F2 tornado tracked from just east of Smithfield to five miles east-northeast of Eminence, crossing KY 55 north of town between US 421 and Eminence-Point Pleasant Road. More recently, on April 2, 2024, an EF-1 tornado with winds near 110 mph ran nearly eight miles from Jericho to southeast of New Castle, damaging buildings in Jericho along the way.

If a storm opens up a house, barn or shed roof, our crew can tarp it to keep water out until it can be repaired. Once things settle, we'll inspect every roof on the property and document what we find with photos. If you decide to file an insurance claim, we can offer help navigating the claims process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you serve the areas around Eminence too?

Yes. We serve Eminence and nearby Henry County communities, as well as Shelbyville, Simpsonville, La Grange and Frankfort. Call and we'll confirm for your address.

  • Do you work on barn and outbuilding roofs?

Yes. We repair and replace roofs on barns, sheds, detached garages and other outbuildings, including metal roofs, and we can look at them during the same visit as your home.

  • Can you repair the chimney on an older home?

Yes. We rebuild cracked chimney crowns, tuckpoint worn mortar joints and add crickets behind wide chimneys, so water stays out of the roof and the brick.

  • Should I have my roof checked after a storm even if I can't see damage?

It's a good idea. Lifted or creased shingles, loose metal panels and damaged flashing are hard to spot from the ground. A free inspection will tell you what, if anything, needs attention.

  • Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer financing through Acorn Finance, and we can walk you through the options at your free inspection.
